There Will Come Soft Rains (4')
SATB Choir
Text by Sara Teasdale (1884--1933)
There Will Come Soft Rains is choral work based on the poem of the same name by Sara Teasdale. The poem encapsulates the horrors of war by describing the beautiful stillness of nature after war has passed. This harrowing text is set to an unaccompanied SATB choir and consistently returns to the first stanza of the poem as a textual emphasis.
This piece was composed between the end of my Bachelor's program at Rhode Island College and my first semester of my Master's at The Hartt School. To me, the text is a statement against all war and unreasonable violence within the dystopian world we find ourselves living in.
"There Will Come Soft Rains
(War Time)"
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,
Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.
