The Stars Shine For You (Supernova) (5')

Soprano Duet

Text by Katherine Hoyle (b. 2002) (ASCAP)

Workshop Premiered: March 2025 by Dr. Gilda Lyons and Lindsay Kesselman;

The Hartt School, Hartford, CT

The Stars Shine For You (Supernova) is a piece for two sopranos, acapella, set to text by Katherine Hoyle. This piece was composed for Hartt Composition's Workshop for Vocal Works, with a workshop premiere in March 2025 by Hartt's own Dr. Gilda Lyons and two-time GRAMMY Nominee Lindsay Kesselman.

The text was commissioned for this work to portray two characters sharing the stage with a twist: one is the ghost of the other's former lover. As the lovers realign and share their passion for one another, they realize that, while nothing is permanent, their love can be infinite.

Text:

Glowing in the moonlight,

I can still see you, still feel you. (But can you hear me?)

Oh, my poltergeist, I’m bewitched!

Bleeding, loving, running. (I never left)

My hands tie to you, my heart beats for you

(Our hearts beat the same)

You look at me and I feel the sun.

You speak my name and the stars appear.

(Don’t you want to touch the moon?

Don’t you want to drink the sky?)

Oh, my love, I miss your gentle touch.

(Velvet skin, melting onto me)

In a kerosene glow, I see us, forever.

(Will you hold me? Can we stay here, forever?)

My love is a fire, burning and raging

With a single spark you send me ablaze

Calmed in the light of the moon,

The glowing, effervescent shine

Oh my Luna, you glow for me

(And when you look to the sky, will you see me?)

I’ll look to the sky, the stars will spell your name,

In every constellation I’ll see the silhouette of your face.

(Even if you can not see me, you know I will be there)

(I will fill the sky for you, each star blinding and bursting with light, with love)

(I will light every path you wander down, I will turn the tides and carry you home)

(I will fill your days with light and serenity)

(The stars shine for you)

And you, you glow for me

And our love is infinite
